At least 70% of university students are reportedly being sexually harassed by lecturers in tertiary institutions, due to financial challenges and academic needs.
In an interview with Star FM News on the sidelines of the ‘Ending sexual harassment and abuse at universities’ programme, held at the University of Zimbabwe on Friday, United Nations Resident Coordinator Mr Bishow Parajuli said, the UN is partnering government and non-governmental organisations in the fight against sexual harassment, saying poverty should not justify criminal activities.
One of the stakeholders in the fight against sexual harassment, ‘Say What’ executive director Mr. Jimmy Wilford, told star fm news that there is need for policy review in the country’s tertiary institutions since the existing laws do not address circumstances of sexual harassment between university students and lecturers.
